Cocoa butter (lat. Theobroma Cacao), also known as cocoa oil or cocoa fat, is a fat extracted from the seeds of ripe cocoa fruits. Cocoa seeds are a rich source of magnesium, and contain up to three times more antioxidants than green tea. Their extraordinary properties were already known to pre-Columbian civilizations. The Mayans used them to make an aromatic drink to offset fatigue, and among the Aztecs they were a means of payment, as valuable as gold.
Cocoa butter is long-lasting - it contains a large amount of antioxidants that prevent rancidity, making it possible to store it for a long time. Store butter in the refrigerator, in a tightly closed and dark container.
Each cocoa fruit contains dozens of tiny seeds submerged in reddish pulp. The cut fruits undergo a 5-day fermentation process, after which the seeds are separated from them. The separated grains are re-fermented, dried and roasted. The final step is to grind them into a thick, dark paste and heat press them with oil. The by-product of this process is used to produce cocoa powder.
What properties cocoa butter has?
At room temperature it is in solid form and has a very hard consistency. However, thanks to its low melting point (range of 30 to 36 degrees), which is close to the temperature of the human body, it is easy to spread on it and is well absorbed.
Cocoa butter shows almost 100% biocompatibility with the skin, so it is practically non-sensitizing, can be used by allergy sufferers and is safe for children. It is rich in biologically active substances - such as alkaloids and polyphenols, so it nullifies the harmful effects of free radicals. Thanks to its wealth of antioxidants, it delays the skin aging process, reduces the appearance of wrinkles and scars. It can be used by pregnant women, as it brilliantly helps fight stretch marks. Stimulates collagen production and replenishes deficiencies of vitamins and elements such as magnesium, potassium, iron and calcium in the skin.
